Gallivanting Round the Globe: Translating National Identities in Henry V

2012

In this article we shall be looking at the character of MacMorris in Henry V, and at his small but important role in the four captains’ scene. We shall explore some of the historical, cultural, political, dramaturgical and linguistic complexities of his portrayal of Irishness as a necessary preliminary study to its translation into other languages, both for the printed page and for the stage. Spanish and Catalan translations of the scene will be briefly analysed in what we hope will be the framework of a wider, multilingual preoccupation: how does national identity translate in a global context? How does —or can— MacMorris speak in other languages?

The glocalizing duality of contemporary sport

2010

AbstractThis paper assesses the current debate, in the sphere of the sociology of sport, on globalization and sport, arguing that the advance of world sport now, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, is better understood in terms of the phenomenon of glocalization, that is, as a process by which global demands and forces conform or adapt to local conditions (Robertson), contributing in this way to the production of ‘township’ and ‘community’ and to the emergence of national identities. The 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the 1993 European Football Championship and the 2002 Korea-Japan World Football Cup are presented as examples of the dual and paradoxical character of contemporary sport i…

Inkonsekvent og omskiftelig?

2021

Artikkelen undersøker hvordan historikeren P.A. Denne «skandinavistisk…

Manoeuvring in Between: Mapping Out the Transnational Identity of Russian-Speaking Latvians in Sweden and Great Britain

2019

AbstractThe proportion of the Russian-speaking population in Latvia increased dramatically during the Soviet period from 12% in 1935 to 42% in 1990 due to organised labour migration within the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, especially since the end of the 1990s, many Russian-speaking Latvians have migrated to Western countries. Very little is known about the national identities of these Russian-speaking Latvians. By analysing 30 life histories of Russian-speaking migrants from Latvia in Sweden and Great Britain, this study aims to analyse the transnational identities of Russian-speaking Latvians abroad. The analysis shows that the migrants’ own migration patterns in a…

Acculturation Profiles and Perceived Discrimination: Associations with Psychosocial Well-being Among Tunisian Adolescents in Italy

2015

Research usually analyzed the relationships between acculturation or perceived discrimination and immigrants’ well-being, but few studies used an integrative perspective. Framed from a person-oriented approach, the current paper tried to advance the literature examining how acculturation profiles and perceived (group and personal) discrimination were associated with psychosocial well-being in a sample of 348 Tunisian adolescents (females = 48.28%; mean age = 15.72) living in southern Italy. Cluster analytic methods on the scores of acculturation strategies, ethnic and national identities, ethnic and national languages, ethnic and national peer social contacts produced three acculturation pr…
